Discord setup problems

What each Discord error from SpyBot means, from a channel that is not private to a missing Manage Channels permission or a blocked destination.

When a Discord step fails, SpyBot answers with one short sentence under the screen. Find that sentence below. The text is quoted exactly as the bot prints it.

This channel is not private

This channel is not private: it must be hidden from @everyone, with only you and SpyBot added. Choose another channel, or let SpyBot create one in one click.

SpyBot reads the channel permissions before it activates a destination. The channel must be hidden from @everyone, and only you and SpyBot may be added to it.

To make one in Discord: press ➕ next to Text Channels, turn on Private Channel, then add SpyBot as a member. Server administrators keep their access to the channel. You can also press 🔒 Create my private channel and let SpyBot build it.

The server is not yours

Your alerts channel must be on a server you own. Open SpyBot on your own server (create one with ➕ at the bottom of your server list), then try again.

SpyBot only delivers alerts to a server its user owns. If a friend added you to their server, your alerts cannot go there. Create your own server with ➕ at the bottom of your server list, add SpyBot to it, then open 📬 Discord alerts there.

SpyBot cannot create the channel

To create the channel for you, SpyBot needs the Manage Channels permission on this server. Press 🔑 Allow SpyBot, confirm, then Refresh here. You can also choose a channel you made yourself.

The one-click channel needs Manage Channels. Press 🔑 Allow SpyBot, confirm in Discord, then press Refresh. If you prefer to keep that permission out of the install, press Choose an existing channel and pick a private channel you made.

Discord reports this case as Missing Permissions or Missing Access when the bot is refused the channel creation. SpyBot turns that refusal into the sentence above.

The screen expired or changed

These four sentences mean the screen you pressed is out of date. Press Refresh, or open 📬 Discord alerts again from the menu.

This screen expired. Reopen the guide.

The destination changed. Refresh before confirming again.

Invalid selection. Reopen the guide.

Access unavailable for this account or server.

The last one appears when the Discord account no longer resolves to the SpyBot account that opened the screen, or when the server is not one SpyBot accepts. Open the menu from your own account on your own server.

Temporarily unavailable. Refresh to try again.

This one is a Discord or SpyBot hiccup, not a permission problem.

Alerts set up, nothing arriving

  1. Read the heading. Discord alerts: active means delivery is on. paused and blocked both stop alerts.
  2. Test the channel. Press Test delivery, then Confirm. SpyBot posts a delivery test that states no transaction and no payment was made. If no message arrives, the destination is the problem.
  3. Check the channel again. SpyBot needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links there. A channel that becomes public, or that SpyBot loses access to, is set to blocked and receives nothing until you choose a destination again.
  4. Resume a pause. A paused destination stays paused until you press Resume. A pause on the whole account stops Discord too: see Not receiving alerts?.
  5. Allow for the ten-minute window. An alert still waiting after 10 minutes expires without being sent.
